Simple ways to celebrate freedom, fun, and togetherness.
Independence Day is more than fireworks and barbecue—it's a beautiful chance to pause, celebrate our freedoms, and make memories with the ones we love. On the homestead (or in any home that values connection over chaos), July 4th can be a day of simple joys, old-fashioned fun, and plenty of red, white, and blue.
Whether you're planning a big backyard bash or just enjoying the day with your crew, these family-friendly 4th of July activities will help you slow down, laugh loud, and celebrate the heart of summer.
I may get commission from links
1. Make DIY Patriotic Crafts
Let the kids (and adults!) get creative with some simple, inexpensive craft ideas.
Craft ideas:
Handprint flags or firework paintings using straws
Red, white, and blue paper chains or windsocks
Popsicle stick flags
Painted rocks with patriotic designs
Star garlands made from recycled cardboard
Set up a little “craft station” outside with a drop cloth or picnic table for mess-free fun!
2. Host Backyard Games + Races
Get everyone moving with some old-fashioned, unplugged outdoor fun.
Games to try:
Sack races (use old pillowcases!)
Three-legged race
Water balloon toss
Hula hoop contest
Tug-of-war with a rope and bandana
Ring toss using jars and rope rings
Offer small prizes or homemade ribbons for extra smiles!
3. Read the Declaration of Independence (Kid Version)
Take a few minutes to reflect on what this holiday is all about. There are child-friendly versions of the Declaration that you can read aloud, or even act out with costumes if your crew loves drama!
Bonus idea: Have kids share what "freedom" means to them and write it on a chalkboard or poster.
4. Create a Red, White & Blue Snack Station
Involve the whole family in putting together a festive snack board with patriotic colors.
Ideas include:
Strawberries, blueberries, and banana slices
Yogurt dip with star-shaped fruit
Popcorn with red & blue sprinkles
Rice crispy treats with red, white & blue drizzle
Star-shaped cookies to decorate
This doubles as both an activity and a treat!
5. Plan a Family Picnic
Keep it low-key and lovely with a picnic in the backyard, local park, or even your living room (if it rains!).
Bring quilts, sandwiches, lemonade, and bug spray. Add a playlist of Americana folk music or classic country to set the mood.
6. Sing Patriotic Songs Together
Music brings people together—especially old favorites that generations have shared.
Try singing:
“The Star-Spangled Banner”
“America the Beautiful”
“This Land Is Your Land”
“God Bless America”
Print out simple lyrics or let the kids make a “microphone” from paper towel rolls!
7. Sparkler Fun or Firefly Catching at Dusk
If fireworks aren’t possible, sparklers are a safe (and magical) alternative for young kids. Set clear safety boundaries and always supervise closely.
Or go totally natural and send the kids out with jars to catch fireflies as the sun sets—pure, simple summer magic.
8. Say a Family Prayer of Gratitude
Before your meal or fireworks begin, gather everyone together for a short moment of thankfulness. Thank God for your freedom, for your family, and for the everyday blessings of peace and purpose.
Final Thoughts
Family traditions don’t have to be fancy to be meaningful. This 4th of July, fill your day with laughter, learning, and love—right there in your backyard, at your kitchen table, or barefoot on the grass. The most lasting memories are often the simplest ones.
Happy Independence Day from Hill + Hollow! May your day be full of faith, family, and freedom.
